Meet the Stronger Samsung Galaxy Series—Powered by their New Style of Names
For all this time, the lineup of Samsung smartphone products always had relatively appropriate names when they are launched. For the same reason, most products had different names even if they were in the same product lineup. Prior to
IFA 2011, they announced that they will be naming their products after having divided them into five separate lineups. The name that represents having the best performance and that leads the front line is S, premium level is R (Royal), high-quality lineup is W (Wonder), middle class brand is M (Magical), and distribution type is Y (Young Minded). These names will be applied together with smartphone brands like Galaxy and Wave. The first products that applied these names were revealed at
IFA 2011. Let's see what characteristics they have.
Galaxy R
As it surpasses the
Galaxy S2, it is clear that its performance and functions have received an upgrade,
Galaxy R has a strong color of premium. Its specifications are just as good as Galaxy S.
Galaxy R that was introduced this time is geared with 4.2 inch super clear LCD, 1GHz dual core processor, android 2.3.4, 5.0 mega pixel camera. And it can record and play HD. The whole design is pretty similar with Galaxy S2. The front has the angular shape like
Galaxy S2, and the feeling as you grip it in your hand is similar to Galaxy S2—maybe because of its screen size? Only the middle part of the backside is the has an aluminum cover, unlike
Galaxy S2 that has an aluminum cover over its entirety.
Galaxy W
Although it is not premium level, it is a high-quality product. It adopted a 3.7 inch LCD with 800x480 resolutions, so the screen is a tad smaller. But it supplemented some of performance by adopting 1.4 GHz single core processor. It has the possibility of becoming a lineup known for a relatively comfortable size, performance, and relatively low price. It has android 2.3.4 and 5.0 mega pixel camera sensor. Unlike
Galaxy R, it has more round feeling, and since the screen is small, gripping it in your hand is more comfortable. he backside cover is plastic, but it does not slip as it has minute bump patterns. It feels a bit strange because the front home button has a hair pattern.
Galaxy M Pro
There is no full-touch model of
Galaxy M, and only Galaxy M Pro had the qwerty keyboard. Pro is the product that applied qwerty keyboard on the basic model. Uniquely,
Galaxy M is the only qwerty product. The screen became smaller because of the keyboard that has been installed, but its performance cannot be ignored. Since it combines a 2.7 inch HVGA (480x320) resolution and 1 GHz processor, its movement is good. The size is similar compared to other qwerty keyboards, but it is also thinner and lighter with the weight of 108g. Users can switch directions and select with the light sensor in the middle. It has the sticky feeling of a keyboard, but its entire frame or composition has a strong feeling of a Blackberry.
Galaxy Y
Suitable for distribution types,
Galaxy Y is small and light. Its function is comparatively lower than other smartphones with a 3 inch TFT LCD of QVGA resolution, 832 MHz processor, and 2.0 mega pixel camera. Of course, it has all of the wireless LAN, Bluetooth, GPS functions. Since it used a small screen, the size is cute and comes into the hand perfectly. The backside is decorated with a silver plastic cover. Compared to its specifications, the movement of the UI is okay as well. It is a smartphone concept that allows those people who have a burden of using an expensive smartphone, use freely.
Galaxy Y Pro
It is the qwerty version of
Galaxy Y, but this model was more prominent than
Galaxy Y. The 2.6 inch sized screen is smaller than Galaxy Y’s. But the resolution is the same at 320x240. Just like
Galaxy M Pro, its corners were all carved round, but it separated all the keys so that it won't bother each other when pressing individual keys. Although it is not as high quality as
Galaxy M Pro, it could be an alternative model for people who are looking for a cheap qwerty phone. Its weight is 102.4g. It used 832 MHz processor, and it is equipped with 3.0 mega pixel camera.
Bonus! Galaxy Xcover
Galaxy Xcover is not a product with an official name. It was just introduced at the scene, so it is introduced in the same format.
Galaxy Xcover is not a smartphone that aims to be high-quality, but it is a rugged smartphone that can be used in various tough situations. It is dust and water proof so it can probably survive in a jungle or desert. So its specifications are pretty low: 3.65 inch LCD of HVGA (320x240) resolution, 800MHz processor, and 3.0 mega pixel camera. The product looks coarse, but it is impressive that they put a hardware buttons on it rather than touch buttons.
